The five minutes at the start of a lesson that do the most work
Ask a Year 9 class what they covered last term and watch the room go quiet. Not because they're being difficult. Because forgetting is the default. The brain drops what it doesn't use. This is normal, it happens to all of us, and it's exactly what retrieval practice is designed to fight.
Retrieval practice is simple: pull information out of memory instead of putting more in. Every time a student successfully recalls something, that memory gets stronger and easier to reach next time. It sounds obvious. It's also one of the most reliably backed findings in cognitive science, and one of the most consistently skipped in real classrooms.
The reason it gets skipped isn't that teachers don't rate it. It's that it feels like one more thing to build, on top of a lesson that's already taking too long to plan. So let's make it small.
Why it beats re-reading and re-teaching
When students re-read notes or you re-explain a concept, it *feels* productive. The material looks familiar, so everyone assumes it's learned. That familiarity is a trap. Recognising something on a page is not the same as being able to produce it in an exam or apply it in a new problem.
Retrieval flips the effort. It's harder in the moment, which is the point. That effort is what builds durable memory. A student who struggles to recall the difference between weathering and erosion, then gets it, has done more learning than one who read the definition again and nodded along.
The research is blunt about the size of the effect. Pulling knowledge out repeatedly, spaced over time, outperforms almost every other study method students actually use. And it costs you very little to set up.
What five minutes actually looks like
You don't need a quiz platform or a laminated deck of cards. You need a handful of good questions and a routine the class expects.
A few formats that work at the start of a lesson:
- •**Last lesson, last week, last term.** Three questions. One from the previous lesson, one from a week ago, one from earlier in the year. This bakes in spacing without a separate spaced-practice system.
- •**Brain dump.** Two minutes, blank page, write everything you remember about photosynthesis. Then compare against a partner or a model answer. Fast to run, and it surfaces gaps you can address on the spot.
- •**Cold questioning off a slide.** Four short-answer questions on the board. Students write answers silently, then you take responses using no hands up so every student has to retrieve, not just the confident few.
The key is that students generate the answer from memory first. Books closed. If you let them look it up, you've turned retrieval back into re-reading.
The mistakes that quietly undo it
Retrieval practice is easy to do badly. A few things to watch for:
- •**Marking it.** The moment retrieval becomes a graded test, students feel the stakes and the anxiety climbs. Keep it low-stakes. The purpose is learning, not judgement.
- •**No feedback.** A quick quiz where students never find out the right answers reinforces wrong ones. Always close the loop, even if it's just reading out the correct responses.
- •**Only asking what was just taught.** If every question is from five minutes ago, you're testing short-term recall, not durable memory. The value is in reaching back days and weeks.
- •**Making it optional.** Hands-up questioning lets the same three kids do all the work. Everyone needs to retrieve, so write, mini-whiteboards, or cold call.
None of these fixes cost time. They're about how you run the routine, not how much you prepare.
Where it fits with explicit instruction
Retrieval isn't a separate strategy bolted onto good teaching. It's part of it. Archer and Hughes talk about daily and cumulative review as a core feature of explicit instruction, precisely because new learning sits on top of prior learning. If the foundation has faded, the new lesson has nowhere to land.
So the five-minute opener does two jobs at once. It strengthens what came before, and it warms up the exact knowledge students need for what's coming next. Teaching quadratics today? Retrieve factorising first. Analysing a new text? Retrieve the technique names from last week. The review isn't filler before the real lesson. It's the runway.
Making it a habit, not a heroic effort
The teachers who sustain retrieval practice aren't the ones with the fanciest resources. They're the ones who made it a fixed routine. Same slot, every lesson, so it stops being a decision and becomes a reflex for the class.
